CHRIST'S LAST TWO COMMANDS

Newsletter 133 March 29, 2009

Mark 16:15-17, and Matthew 26:26-29

The latter portion of the Bible is named the “New Testament” because it reveals our Lord’s final instructions to his family as to what his will is for us to be doing until he returns. His last instruction before his death was to establish a physical memorial service in order that we might not forget what he has done in order to establish the possibility of our salvation.

For those of the Jewish background, this weekly memorial would replace the Passover feast and the daily sacrifices, and for them and the rest of mankind, the gentile world, it is a weekly reminder of his death, burial, and resurrection, and of our own death to sin, burial in baptism, and resurrection to a new life in preparation for Heaven. This we are to be faithful in observing until he returns for us and we can remember it with him in heaven.

1. OBSERVE THIS MEMORIAL

Matthew 26:26-29 (English Standard Version)

26 (Matthew 26:26 : For Matthew 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:18-20; 1 Cor 11:23-25 ) Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and (Matthew 26:26 : Matthew 14:19 ) after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; (Matthew 26:26 : 1 Cor 10:16; John 6:53) this is my body."

27 And he took a cup, and when he (Matthew 26:27 : Matthew 15:36) had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you,

28 for (Matthew 26:28 : Matthew 26:26 ) this is my (Matthew 26:28 : Exodus 24:8; Zech 9:11; Heb 13:20 ) blood of the [a] covenant, which is poured out for (Matthew 26:28 : Matthew 20:28 ) many (Matthew 26:28 : Mark 1:4; Luke 1:77) for the forgiveness of sins.

29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you (Matthew 26:29 : Matthew 13:43) in my Father’s kingdom."

2. GO TEACH ALL THE WORLD

Mark 16:15-17 (English Standard Version)

15 And he said to them, (Mark 16:15 : Matt 28:19) "Go into all the world and (Mark 16:15 : Col 1:23; Mark 13:10; Acts 1:8; Rom 10:18 ) proclaim the gospel to (Mark 16:15, Rom 8:22) the whole creation.

16 (Mark 16:16 : John 3:18) Whoever believes and is (Mark 16:16 : John 3:5) baptized (Mark 16:16 : Acts 16:31; Rom 10:9; 1 Pet 3:21) will be saved, but (Mark 16:16 : Mark 16:11; Luke 24:11, 41; Acts 28:24; 1 Pet 2:7; 2 Thess 2:12 ) whoever does not believe will be condemned.

17 And (Mark 16:17 : Mark 11:23) these signs will accompany those who believe:(Mark 16:17 : Acts 5:16; 8:7; 16:18; 19:12; Mark 9:38) in my name they will cast out demons; (Mark 16:17 : Acts 2:4; 10:46; 19:6; 1 Cor 12:10, 28, 30; 13:1; 14:2, 4 ) they will speak in new tongues;
