BURIED WITH CHRIST IN BAPTISM

Newsletter 202 July 18, 2010

Bob

Jesus performed many miracles during his short ministry on earth. Yes, they accomplished an immediate obvious purpose; they also served as witness to his being the Son of God, but most of them had still another purpose, and that is that they tested the faith of the person on whom they were performed. Such terms as “take up your bed.” “go wash,” “go to the priest,” are often evident. Their willingness to follow these simple instructions were a test. Likewise baptism follows faith and repentance, it too requires every Christian to make a decision and follow simple instructions. It is a test of obedience, which repeats in action every facet of the gospel; the death burial and resurrection of Christ Jesus that we might be freed from the domination of sin.

Romans 6:3-14
(King James Version)

CHRIST DIED IN OUR PLACE

He obeyed His Father, even in permitting himself to be crucified, for our sakes. He was buried in a tomb, to arise from the tomb three days later, proving His divinity.

3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? (Matthew 28:19, Acts 2:38, Acts 8:16, Acts 19:5, Galatians 3:27)

OUR BAPTISM PICTURES THE GOSPEL

4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (Colossians 2:12, Acts 2:24, Romans 6:9, John 11:40, 2 Corinthians 13:4, Romans 7:6, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Galatians 6:15, Ephesians 4:23, Colossians 3:10)

HIS DEATH, BURIAL AND RESURRECTION

5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: (2 Corinthians 4:10, Philippians 3:10, Colossians 2:12, Colossians 3:1)

6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. (Ephesians 4:22, Colossians 3:9, Galatians 2:20, Galatians 5:24, Galatians 6:14, Romans 7:24)

IT PROVIDES GODS WAY TO BE CLEANSED OF SIN

7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. (1 Peter 4:1)

AND TO LIVE A NEW LIFE IN HIM

8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: (Romans 6:4, 2 Corinthians 4:10, 2 Timothy 2:11)

9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. (Acts 2:24, Romans 6:4, Revelation 1:18)

10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

OUR NEW LIFE IS NO LONGER DOMINATED BY SIN

11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:2, Romans 7:4, Romans 7:6, Galatians 2:19, Colossians 2:20, Colossians 3:3, 1 Peter 2:24)

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. (Romans 6:14)

SIN NO LONGER RULES OVER US!

13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. (Romans 6:16, Romans 6:19, Romans 7:5, Colossians 3:5, Romans 12:1, 2 Corinthians 5:14, 1 Peter 2:24)

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. (Romans 8:2, Romans 8:12, Romans 6:12, Romans 5:18, Romans 7:4, Romans 7:6, Galatians 4:21, Romans 5:17, Romans 5:21)

THIS WEEK'S SCRIPTURE

“Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love, in honour preferring one another; not slothful in business; fervent in spirit: serving the Lord;”

Romans 12:10-11

_____________

Light My Candle...
Mrs. Donovan was walking down O'Connell Street in Dublin when she met up with Father Flaherty.

The Father said, 'Top o' the mornin' to ye! Aren't ye Mrs. Donovan and didn't I marry ye and yer hoosband 2 years ago?'

She replied, 'Aye, that ye did, Father.'

The Father asked, 'And be there any wee little ones yet?'

She replied, 'No, not yet, Father.'

The Father said, 'Well now, I'm going to Rome next week and I'll light a candle for ye and yer hoosband.'

She replied, 'Oh, thank ye, Father.'

They then parted ways.

Some years later they met again.

The Father asked, 'Well now, Mrs. Donovan , how are ye these days?'

She replied, 'Oh, very well, Father!'

The Father asked, 'And tell me, have ye any wee ones yet?'

She replied, 'Oh yes, Father! Three sets of twins and 4 singles, 10 in all!'

The Father said, 'That's wonderful! How is yer loving hoosband doing?'

She replied, 'E's gone to Rome to blow out yer candle.'
