1 Corinthians 6:1-11 (King James Version)
OVER A BROTHER OR SISTER?
1 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints? (Matthew 18:17)
Paul shames the church at Corinth that they have turned to Roman non-believing judges to settle their disagreements in the church. The whole context of these paragraphs is that we might have guidance as to handle such things even today. One might say, “These are family matters and should be settled by those of which Christ is the head, with his word as our authority, chapter and verse, please. Gently, and with love. Not tradition, the word of God. We can not expect a non-believing judge who does not accept that Christ is the head of the church and the word is divinely inspired, to solve any spiritual problem.
OVER THE WORLDLY?
2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? (Romans 6:16, Daniel 7:18, Daniel 7:22, Daniel 7:27, Matthew 19:28, 1 Corinthians 1:20)
Apparently, Christians will assist in judging the worldly, Revelation 2:26-27, Revelation 3:21, Daniel 7:27, it would seem that even a supreme court judge will not be qualified to do this if he is not also a follower of the Lord and student of His Word.
OVER ANGELS?
3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life? (Romans 6:16)
The Greek word used here is sometimes translated as “to rule over or govern“. We tend to think of angels as being superior to man because their home is heaven, and because of their powers, but in reality, they are created to be servants and serve the saints of heaven as they now serve the Lord. Hebrews 1:14, 2 Peter 2:4, and Jude 6.
SO SETTLE YOUR DIFFERENCES AMONG YOURSELVES.
The basic thought here is that even the least esteemed Christian in the church is better to be consulted than the most legally qualified non-believer from the world.
Non-believers have no concept of the Word and the basic qualification, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Such love in foreign to the world
4 If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.
IT IS SHAMEFUL WHEN CHRISTIANS FIGHT AMONG THEMSELVES!
5 I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren? (1 Corinthians 4:14, 1 Corinthians 15:34, Acts 1:15, Acts 9:13, 1 Corinthians 6:1)
6 But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. (2 Corinthians 6:14, 1 Timothy 5:8)
7 Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? (Matthew 5:39)
RATHER TO BE WRONGED THAN TO WIN THE LAST WORD AND LOSE A BROTHER
8 Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren. (1 Thessalonians 4:6)
GOD WILL BE THE JUDGE OF ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS
9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? You Didn't Get The Memo?
Memo from CEO to Manager:
Today at 11 o clock there will be a total eclipse of the sun. This is when the sun disappears behind the moon for two minutes. As this is something that cannot be seen every day, time will be allowed for employees to view the eclipse in the parking lot. Staff should meet in the lot at ten to eleven, when I will deliver a short speech introducing the eclipse, and giving some background information. Safety goggles will be made available at a small cost.
Memo from Manager to Department Head:
Today at ten to eleven, all staff should meet in the car park. This will be followed by a total eclipse of the sun, which will appear for two minutes. For a moderate cost, this will be made safe with goggles. The CEO will deliver a short speech beforehand to give us all some information. This is not something that can be seen every day.
Memo from Department Head to Floor Manager:
The CEO will today deliver a short speech to make the sun disappear for two minutes in the form of an eclipse. This is something that cannot be seen every day, so staff will meet in the car park at ten or eleven. This will be safe, if you pay a moderate cost.
Memo from Floor Manager to Supervisor:
Ten or eleven staff are to go to the car park, where the CEO will make the sun disappear for two minutes. This doesn’t happen every day. It will be safe and as usual, it will cost you.
Memo from Supervisor to Staff:
Some staff will go to the car park today to see the CEO disappear. It is a pity this doesn’t happen every day.
