TWO KINDS OF WISDOM

Newsletter 113 November 9, 2008

Please do not confuse “knowledge” with “wisdom”. A person can have any number of graduate degrees and great knowledge, but still not possess wisdom

As a young man, Solomon, asked God for wisdom that he might be able to rule His kingdom wisely. God granted him wisdom to such a degree that he was, and is, considered to be the most wise man to have ever lived. The books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, and some of the Psalms, stand as evidence. It was only when he turned away from God to pagan worship that his wisdom failed him. He asked God for wisdom. So can we.

God has given His promise. “If any of you lack wisdom. Him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraided not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5. This letter was written to Christians, not to all men everywhere. And it is a conditional promise, “ask in faith, nothing wavering.” If we ask, then let us not doubt, let us be prepared to step out in faith, not seeing all the possible problems that could possibly come. If we are certain of something, then it is not in faith. For example, Phyllis and I boarded ship for Africa when our second daughter Ruth, a six week old baby had pneumonia. Later the doctor in New York City asked our friend if that baby survived the trip. Well, she not only survived, but many years later she is now a grandmother. It may not have been the wisest thing to have done, but it was certainly in faith.

Make it a rule that when you are making important decisions, you will ask God for wisdom, then make your decision, and act on it.

There are two kinds of wisdom. James tells us:

James 3:13-18 (King James Version)

13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

The first is of the world. James says it is earthly, sensual, and devilish; why, because its fruits are, envy, strife, confusion, and every evil work.

The second is of God, pure, peaceable, gentle, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, and.

Keep in mind. Knowledge is composed of facts. Wisdom is of God, freely given to His children, for the asking. Don’t pray for knowledge, God wants you to sweat for that.

The Smith's were proud of their family tradition. Their ancestors had come to America on the Mayflower. They had included Senators and Wall Street wizards. They decided to compile a family history, a legacy for their children and grandchildren. They hired a fine author. Only one problem arose; how to handle that great-uncle George, who was executed in the electric chair. The author said he could handle the story tactfully. The book appeared. It said "Great-uncle George occupied a chair of applied electronics at an important government institution, was attached to his position by the strongest of ties, and his death came as a great shock."
