WE ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

 Newsletter  122

Our text today opens with a reference that is linked to Isaiah 42:6-7. This, we know as Galilee, here called “Galilee of the Gentiles” because it was through this area that many Gentile traders first entered into Israel. Galilee had many non-Jewish settlers who made this their new home. The Jews thought of anyone who was not a Jew as being a heathen who lacked knowledge of God and therefore, they “sat in darkness.” Jesus brought light to them. Not just light, but “great light”. The saying that they lived in the “shadow of death” indicates that they were living under the punishment of death for their sins, even though they did not know it. Christ brought light to them.

Matthew 4:15-17

 15. The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
 16. The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
 17. From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
This passage introduces the “Sermon on the Mount” which begins a few verses down in the next chapter with the “beatitudes,” a series of verses which all begin with the words, “Blessed are …” In Matthew 5:14-16, after those, the thought is returned to “Light.”

Matthew 5:14-16

14. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.“
Many of us have thought within themselves, “How can I be a light? I have no special capabilities, I am very uncomfortable to be at the focus of everyone’s attention.” Because we feel that there is so little that we can do, we excuse ourselves from doing anything at all.

We completely miss the point, that God delights in using small things to accomplish great results. If we do not thrive under the scrutiny of the spotlight, do something that is off stage. Did you ever wonder what all the people do who are listed in the credits of a film. There are only a few actors on whom the camera has focused, but there are many we know nothing about who make the finished product possible. In a church of any size at all, there are only a few “up front”, but a whole host of others who are supporting team, each one doing their little bit. It wouldn’t work without them. Add the light God gave you to the candlepower of His people. Like He made the apostles to become “Fishers of men”, he can make of us, the “Light of the World.”

A friend, driving home from a fishing trip in northern Michigan with his boat in tow, had engine trouble a few miles inland from Lake Huron. He didn't have a CB radio in his car, so he decided to use his marine radio to get help. Climbing into his boat, he broadcast his call letters and asked for assistance. A Coast Guard officer responded, "Please give your location."

"I'm on Interstate-75, two miles south of Standish."

The officer paused, "Could you repeat that?"

"I-75, two miles south of Standish."

A longer pause. Then an incredulous voice asked, "How fast were you going when you hit shore?"

Let is praise God together for his gift to us all, and share that wondrous good news everywhere we go!

THE END IS NEAR

A local priest and a local pastor stood by the side of the road holding up a sign that said, "The End is Near! Turn yourself around now before it's too late!" They planned to hold up the sign to each passing car.

"Leave us alone, you religious nuts!" yelled the first driver as he sped by.

From around the curve they heard a big splash.

"Do you think," said one clergyman to the other, "we should just put up a sign that says 'bridge out' instead?

AND IT CAME TO BE

Newsletter  121                                                January, 4, 2009

STARTING WITH THIS ISSUE:
The lesson contained in this column will be based on a text from the week's scriptures read during the previous week. In this case, Matthew 1,2,3.

AND IT CAME TO BE

We know that the Gospel of Matthew was written with the Jewish nation in mind because of the many prophecies , that had been made many years before. The non-Jewish world was not aware of these, but every person of Jewish descent was . They were a part of the fabric of his life. It was these very prophecies that prepared this nation for the coming of the Messiah.

Matthew 1:18-25 (King James Version)

18 “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.”

Matthew 2:24 tells us that this was foretold by the prophet.

Herod was troubled about this prophecy for he was king at that time. This same prophet had also told where the Messiah would be born. Bethlehem of Judah, just eight miles from his very throne! “And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, art not the least among the princes of Judah: for out of thee shall come a governor, that shall rule my people Israel.”

Because of this prophecy, the Lord warned Joseph to take his family to Egypt to save him, and to fulfill the prophecy “Out of Egypt have I called my Son.” God had sent this family from Nazareth to Bethlehem, so that Jesus might be born there, and then instructed them to flee to Egypt so that, he could be called back to return to Nazareth that he might begin his ministry from Nazareth. “and he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.“ Matthew 2:23.

God still puts his servants where He plans to use us today.

In so doing, he saved him from the destruction that Herod sent on the whole area of Ramah. “In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning. Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.” Matthew 2:18 - Jeremiah 31:15.

Before he began his ministry in Galilee, Jesus went to John the Baptist that he might be baptized. John was preaching there also in fulfillment of a prophesy from Isaiah “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him. And Lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Isaiah 11:2, 42:1.

In the first three chapters of Matthew, there are ten ancient prophecies of the coming of the Messiah, that are fulfilled. And they came to be!

SET YOUR GOALS HIGH

Newsletter 120 December 28, 2008

Philippians 3:11-21 (King James Version)

At this particular time of the year, many people will be setting goals. Some, who have not been realistic in their enthusiasm, have set goals that they are not able to reach so they become discouraged and quit. Others of a more pessimistic nature will not bother saying, “I will just break them right away.“ I will just not bother, but the apostle Paul believed in setting goals, and in making every effort to reach them. Not making any effort, means certain failure. All Christians have a common goal. That goal is to enter Heaven where we will be with God. Paul used various analogies, but one we are very familiar with is that life is like a race. The finish line, the goal, is Heaven. Keeping that in the back of our minds, let us read our text from his letter to the Philippians.

He was writing to Christians. It would appear that some of them were contented to relax once they had made a good beginning. With phrases such as, “If by any means,” “As though I had already attained,” I count not myself to have apprehended,” “I press toward the mark,” it is clear that he considers that there is more to do after one has made the decision to follow Christ. Set a mark, a goal, and work toward the “prize.”

Since our ultimate goal is heaven, set intermediate goals that will lead us toward that. The Bible is our guide book, so set a goal to read it through again. We will find that we have missed many truths in previous readings.

Note that, Paul set himself up as an example, and perfection as the ultimate goal. Clearly none of us will reach that ultimate in this life, but to live means to grow. Stop growing, and die. That is a fact of life.

11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.

17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.

18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:

19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)

20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

THE CHRISTMAS ACCOUNT

Newsletter 119

Luke 2:1-20 (King James Version)

1And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

2(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

5To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

20And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

OUR SAVIOR IS BORN!

Newsletter 118 December 14, 2008

It takes only a few words to tell the wonderful story of the fulfillment of the promised Messiah's birth, a birth that would change the world for all the ages to follow. Without CHRIST, the 25th of December would be meaningless, just another day. Without Christ, all would face eternity condemned, but because of Christ, all who believe it can be saved. Neevr replace CHRIST with an "X"!

He is God's only begotten Son, and the saviour of all obedient believers.

Matthew 1:18-25 (King James Version)

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.

25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

I quote from the words inscribed on the walls of the US Capitol's new visitor's center, just opened to the public.

"We have built no temple but the Capitol. We consult no common oracle but the Constitution."

That could have proudly been on the walls of pagan ancient Rome, but have we sunk to the level that we "worship" the capital building, and spread iit's message as oracles, as of God? God is not mocked, He will have the last word! I am as shocked as the apostle Paul was, when he ascended the hill to the Parthenon and Mars Hill.

By Bob.

THE CHRISTMAS ACCOUNT

OUR SAVIOR IS BORN
